What is your pH?

Did you know that maintaining the correct pH balance in your body is very important to overall health, including your teeth and your gums?   If your body’s pH is highly acidic, you can increase your risk for a variety of diseases.  Dentally, when the acidity in your mouth drops below 5.5, the bacteria that causes tooth decay and gum disease thrives.

A pH balance of 0 to 6 is acidic, a pH balance of 7 is neutral, and a pH balance of 8 to 14 is alkaline. Eating a lot of acidic foods will therefore cause your body to be acidic.  By learning to eat foods that are more alkaline, you can help to balance your pH.

You can test the pH of your saliva to show the digestive enzyme activity in your body by dropping into your local health food store and purchasing test strips.  For a healthy range, your saliva pH should be 6.5 to 7.5.

By modifying your diet to include more alkaline foods you can help not only your dental health, but your overall health as well.  There are many websites that will offer you lists of foods that can help!
